Incheon National University (President Park Jong-tae) announced that it has succeeded in autonomous driving in Songdo, Incheon with an autonomous driving algorithm developed by undergraduate students along with ride flux, a self-driving software startup.
The autonomous driving, which took place in Songdo, Incheon, is part of the Future Automobile Technology Convergence Innovation Talent Development Project participated in at Incheon National University, and is the result of undergraduate students, graduate students and incumbent mentors working together to develop subjects and run industry-academic projects.
Professor Kang Chang-mook of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Incheon National University, who is in charge of the manpower training project, supported students in various fields, including subjects and comparative departments, so that they could build autonomous vehicle hardware with RideFlux and equip them with self-designed recognition, judgment, and control algorithms. Based on what they learned during the semester, the students developed during the vacation period, and finally completed self-driving around Incheon National University Songdo Campus and Incheon National University Entrance Station. In this trip, students showed off functions such as map production for autonomous driving, optimal route generation, lane and obstacle recognition, and route control through two self-driving vehicles built by Incheon National University.
A student at Incheon National University who participated in the algorithm development said, "It was a bit difficult to install the self-made algorithm on the vehicle, but it was unbelievable when the autonomous driving was completed based on the actual vehicle," adding, "The best thing was that I was able to deal with problems in the actual driving environment and learn a lot about the field."
"Incheon Songdo is close to major cities such as Seoul and Gyeonggi and is a good environment for pre-emptive introduction of autonomous driving services as it is a planned city," said RideFlex, a participating organization. "We look forward to creating an era of autonomous driving with local talents who are interested in and passionate about developing autonomous driving technology."
The Future Automotive Technology Convergence Innovation Talent Development Project was carried out in the form of a ministry collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and KIAT is in charge of supporting the project. Currently, the project is underway at 25 schools nationwide, including Incheon National University, Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Pusan National University, and the project will be completed this year.
